What is a Cyst?

A Cyst is an abnormal sac of tissue within the body, it contains fluid which can sometimes develop from a source of infection., if left untreated. Cysts commonly occur in the jaw bone rather than in any other bone in the body.

Small cysts that do not involve vital structures like your nerves are removed via Cyst Enucleation – this is where the Cyst is removed in whole in one surgical procedure.

The basic stages to Cyst Enucleation procedure involve:

  • The soft tissue over the cyst is lifted, a window may be created through the jaw bone in order to gain access to the cyst.
  • The Surgeon will remove the Cyst using specialist dental equipment and instruments.
  • Any Extractions of teeth involved are completed.
  • After completion, the Surgeon will close the incision using stitches
  • For larger Cyst cavities, an external dressing may be placed for 24-48 hours. This helps reduce swelling and the size of the blood clot for enhanced healing.
  • Sometimes the Cyst will be sent to a lab for further investigation if required.
  • Yes, there are different types of Cysts that commonly occur in the jaw.

They can be categorised into Odontogenic Tumours and Cysts and Non-odontogenic Tumours and Cysts.

  • Odontogenic Tumours and Cysts – these are a group of cysts together, known to groq quite large before symptoms are felt. They are benign and can be cured, they include dentigerous cysts (cysts that form close to the crown or on the peak of the crown of an unerupted tooth) and periapical cysts (cysts that form at the root of the tooth as a result of pulp infection or from the nerve of the tooth dying).
  • Non-odontogenic Tumours and Cysts – these are a group of cysts that are found in surrounding tissues of teeth development. They are not as common as Odontogenic Cysts and can be found in bone marrows and nasal canals.
  • Cysts develop for many reasons, such as:

  • Infection from teeth
  • Inflammation at the root of the tooth
  • Gum inflammation
  • The cells and fibres surrounding a developing tooth
  • Genetics
  • There are numerous reasons why you may need your Cyst removing. Such as:

  • If the Cyst is left untreated, it can develop over time, becoming a risk to neighbouring anatomical structures, such as the nerves in the jaw, surrounding teeth – this can lead to problems and disability.
  • Larger Cysts are complex to treat, these can pose a higher risk of complications. Therefore, it is better to remove the Cyst at an earlier stage rather than later.
  • No, the procedure is done under local anaesthetic. The Surgeon will check that you are fully numb before starting the procedure.
