What are Composite Veneers?

Composite veneers are created by building up composite resin material over your tooth’s natural structure. Typically, there’s no need for drilling, but in some cases, we may need to lightly roughen the top surface of your tooth, although we always strive to keep this to a minimum to ensure conservative treatment.

We then use a UV light to harden the material, and then we’ll polish and contour the veneers to achieve the appearance you desire.

You’ll find that composite veneers, along with composite bonding and veneers, serve as a less invasive alternative to traditional dental treatments like Dental Crowns.

What Is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a safe and conservative cosmetic dental treatment for you. It involves applying composite resin material to your existing tooth structure. It’s an excellent choice if you have chipped, fractured, worn-down, or discoloured teeth. With composite bonding, we can not only restore your tooth’s health and function but also achieve a highly aesthetic result. If you have gaps between your teeth, composite bonding can be a great way for you to close those spaces.

FAQS

You can expect your tooth enamel to be cleaned with a mild acidic gel for surface preparation. Then, a bonding agent will be applied. We’ll gradually layer tooth-coloured composite resin material onto your tooth to create the shape and contour you want. Afterward, we’ll use a UV light to harden the composite material. Finally, we’ll polish and contour the composite to achieve your desired look.

In some cases, we may need to slightly roughen the surface of your tooth to help the composite resin material bond better. However, we always strive for a conservative approach.

Composite veneers and bonding both can be done in one appointment. This means you get to leave the clinic with a new smile in just one day!

There is usually no preparation of the natural tooth for composite bonding & veneers. If there is any it will usually be very minimal. We normally use no anaesthetic for cthis. However, if minimal preparation is required we can use anaesthetic if needed, in this case you wouldn’t be able to feel anything.

If you want to whiten your teeth, we always recommend doing this before. Once your desired shade has been achieved, we can then match the composite resin material to the shade of your natural teeth.

Composite veneers generally last around 4-8 years before needing to be replaced.

Cosmetic composite bonding usually lasts around 4 years. However, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene and attend your recall examination appointments.

Composite veneers and bonding can be more prone to staining compared to natural tooth enamel and other dental materials like ceramic/porcelain. While composite materials are designed to resist staining to some extent, they are not entirely resistant to discolouration.

Several factors can contribute to the staining of composite veneers and bonding:

Composite veneers and bonding can be more prone to staining compared to natural tooth enamel and other dental materials like porcelain. While composite materials used in veneers and bonding are designed to resist staining to some extent, they are not entirely impervious to discolouration.

Several factors can contribute to the staining of composite veneers and bonding:

Diet: Consuming dark-coloured foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, and certain berries can lead to staining over time.

Smoking and Tobacco Use: Smoking and using tobacco products can cause significant staining of dental restorations, including composite veneers and bonding.

Oral Hygiene: Inadequate oral hygiene can allow the buildup of plaque and tartar, which can contribute to staining.

Age and Wear: As composite materials age and wear, they may become more susceptible to staining and discolouration.

To minimise the risk of staining, it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, and to avoid or limit the consumption of staining food/drinnks. Additionally, routine dental examinations and professional cleanings can help prevent staining and ensure the longevity of your composite veneers and bonding. If staining does occur, professional teeth cleaning or replacements may be considered to restore the appearance of the restorations.
