What is Fluoride Application & Why is it Important?

What is Fluoride Application & Why is it Important?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can help to strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and sugars in the mouth.

Fluoride application is important because it is a proven and effective method of preventing tooth decay.  When fluoride is applied topically, it can help to remineralise and strengthen areas of enamel that have become weakened by acid erosion.

Regular fluoride application can also help to prevent the development of cavities and reduce the need for more invasive dental treatments, such as fillings or crowns. Fluoride is particularly important for children whose teeth are still developing and are therefore more susceptible to decay.

Fluoride application should only be performed by a dental professional, as overexposure to fluoride can lead to a condition called fluorosis, which can cause white spots or streaks to appear on the teeth.

We strive to apply Fluoride Varnish at every one of your child’s recall examination appointments. This is because tooth decay is one of the most common yet preventable diseases seen in children. Children as young as 12 months old can get cavities.

These cavities can cause pain and lead to tooth loss. Your child’s deciduous (baby) teeth usually stay in the mouth until they are around 11-12 years old. Therefore, it is important for us as a Dental Clinic and you as a parent, to work together and help prevent tooth decay in your child’s teeth.
